What is breast revision surgery?

If a woman has experienced a complication with her implants, or she wishes to exchange them for a different size, type, or profile, breast revision surgery can restore an aesthetically pleasing appearance in the chest and enhance the patient’s overall comfort and quality of life. The surgery often comes with less downtime than the original augmentation procedure due to the fact that the same incisions can be reused during a revision and the breast pocket has already been created.

Who is a good candidate?

You are a good candidate for breast revision in Beverly Hills if you are unhappy with the outcome of your initial breast augmentation procedure for any reason. You may be dissatisfied with the size or shape of your implants, or you may be concerned about a complication such as malposition, rupture, or rippling. As with any surgery, clients should be at a healthy, stable weight for their frame and free from any uncontrolled medical issues. They should be non-smokers of sound mind and body who are realistic and positive in their outlook and who are willing to follow the doctor’s instructions before and after surgery.

What are the most common reasons for breast implant revision?

Capsular contracture

This is an immune response that involves the hardening of the scar tissue surrounding the implants. It can cause cosmetic distortion along with discomfort.

Rupture

Although rare, both saline and silicone implants can rupture. With saline, it will be immediately obvious that the implants have deflated, whereas, with silicone, the patient will need to undergo an ultrasound or MRI.

Rippling

Rippling occurs when the edges of the implants can be seen through the skin, often around the sides of the breasts. This happens commonly when the patient has a limited supply of breast tissue to conceal the devices.

Malposition

Implant malposition occurs when the implants migrate from their correct location.

Symmastia

This occurs when the implants are situated too close together, and the skin between them has drifted upwards from the chest wall, forming a “uniboob” instead of two distinct breast mounds.

Double bubble

Double bubble is a contour deformity that occurs when the breast implants fall below the pre-augmentation inframammary crease.

Implant exchange

When a woman desires to swap out her implants for new ones, it is called implant exchange.

Implant removal

In some cases, a woman may wish to return to a more natural aesthetic, or has encountered complications that demand complete removal of the implants.

Customizing your revision

Your revision procedure can be customized to suit your wishes and achieve your desired cosmetic goals. You’ll choose your new implant cup size, along with the material inside your implant (saline or silicone.) The shape of your implants – round or teardrop-shaped – can also be uniquely aligned with your goals. During a revision, the implants can be moved from a sub-glandular position to a sub-muscular one as well. Dr. Lee will sometimes combine a breast lift or fat transfer with your breast revision in Beverly Hills to maximize your results and provide you with a natural-looking, elegant silhouette.

Breast Revision FAQs

How often do breast implants need to be replaced?

Breast implants are typically expected to last from 10-20 years, although various concerns can arise that dictate a revision surgery sooner.

Does insurance cover breast implant revision?

If breast revision is medically necessary, it will often be covered by insurance carriers. If the procedure is performed for purely cosmetic reasons, no coverage will likely be issued.

Is breast implant revision painful?

Breast revision is usually a shorter procedure with slightly less downtime than the original breast augmentation procedure. Still, there will be swelling, bruising, and soreness to deal with. Your doctor will provide the appropriate pain medications and a compressive garment.
