What is breast reconstruction?

Dr. Lee performs customized breast reconstruction in Beverly Hills for cancer survivors, as well as those affected by congenital breast defects (tuberous breast deformity or Poland’s syndrome). Dr. Lee will provide each client with detailed information on all different options for reconstruction, taking into account your individual breast cancer treatment or reconstructive needs. At PERK, we are here every step of the way to provide support throughout your surgical journey and healing. We also understand that the choice of whether or not to undergo breast reconstruction after cancer is entirely personal.

Breast reconstruction can be performed directly following a mastectomy, or at a slightly later date. When it’s performed immediately, it can lessen the emotional trauma associated with a mastectomy procedure.

What are the different options for reconstruction?

Reconstruction with implants

This is the most common choice for reconstruction patients. The same incision used for a mastectomy can also be used for the insertion of implants. When possible, Dr. Lee will place the incision along the breast crease to minimize scarring on the breasts. When there is not enough skin present at the time of mastectomy, a tissue expander may be needed to stretch out the skin before placing an implant.

Flap reconstruction

In this case, tissue from another area of the body is used to reconstruct a breast mound. This is a more complex surgery than implant insertion and is often used for patients who had radiation treatment. Here are different types of flaps used:

  • TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis muscle) flap – uses tissue from the belly
  • DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap – uses tissue from the belly
  • Latissimus dorsi flap – uses tissue from the upper back
  • GAP (gluteal artery perforator) flaps – uses tissue from the buttocks
  • TUG (transverse upper gracilis) flaps – uses tissue from the inner thigh

What can I expect from my breast reconstruction recovery?

Your recovery depends on the type of reconstruction performed. With implant reconstruction, you typically stay for one night of observation in the hospital. With flap reconstruction, you stay in the hospital for 2-3 days.
