Multiple studies have shown that keeping your blood sugar well controlled improves wound healing and decreases wound healing complications. Consistently high blood glucose affects the microcirculation of blood flow and decreases the amount of oxygen delivered to the wound. This is especially important for patients who have diabetes since stable blood sugar levels will help surgical wounds heal faster.

Here is a list of foods to avoid:

  • Processed sugar such as cakes, candy, pastries, cookies, soda, juice, and ice cream
  • Refined starch such as white bread and bagels
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Potatoes
  • White pasta

For clients with a sweet-tooth, these fruits are both delicious and low in sugar content.

  • Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries

Here is a great smoothie recipe for those who crave something sweet.
