Repeated scientific studies have clearly shown that balding men are very sensitive about their condition. Balding men, in general, feel self-conscious, less attractive, and even helpless about their hair loss. Even thinning hair causes men to feel older and less attractive. Attempts to treat the problem frequently lead to disappointment; a worthless medicine, an embarrassing unnatural hairpiece, or poorly done surgical procedures.
The surgeons at The Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Richard Fleming and Dr. Toby Mayer, are two of the world’s leading authorities on hair loss and hair replacement. With 30 years of experience treating thousands of patients for hair loss, including many movie stars and sports celebrities, the doctors guide you through the maze of misinformation, and provide everything you need to know to make an educated decision about treating your own hair loss.
There are two basic techniques of hair replacement surgery Flaps and Transplants. With these procedures patients do not actually gain hair. It is merely redistributed from one part of the scalp to another. The ultimate goal of hair replacement surgery is to permanently eliminate the baldness, and to evenly distribute the existing hair over the entire scalp. Scalp reductions and tissue expansion are two other techniques used to complement and improve the results achieved with Flaps and Grafts. These two procedures are discussed in subsequent sections.
At present, your own scalp hair is the only suitable donor source. We know that the hair on the sides and back of your head is genetically programmed to grow throughout your life. The only exception is a few patients with dermatologic diseases. It is very important to determine the ultimate relationship between your donor and recipient area. Hair replacement surgery is a very basic question of supply-and-demand. The hair on the side and back of the head is the source of transferable tissue for Flaps and Hair Grafts. This hair will continue to grow forever, even after it has been moved to another part of the scalp.
